Hello all! This post is directed towards my fellow Emergency nurses who have certifications. Passing a BCEN certification exam is a process that takes a great deal of preparation. In order to maintain this certification you must obtain a specified number of hours of Continuing Education Credit/Units (CEUs) or you can retest. Let’s be honest, I don’t know many people who want to take these exams again. I recommend renewal by CEU completion. In order to do so you have to obtain 100 credit hours, 50 of which relating to the content of your certification. I love to save money, so I wanted to share a quick list of resources.

This post is simply for educational purposes. All thoughts and opinions are my own and do not reflect the entirety of nursing.

You can find the BCEN renewal options here.

  • American Association of Critical Care Nurses
  • Area Health Education Center (AHEC)
    • Your area may have a local establishment, check out their website to sign up for free sessions
  • BCEN Learn
    • If you are studying for a certification, the BCEN practice exams give you credits. (this is not free)
    • Some of the study manuals may also have CEU opportunities if you use the redemption code to complete a certain number of practice tests.
    • There are plenty of free pre-recorded webinars as well as live webinars that are 100% free you can sign up for and earn credits.
  • Emergency Nurses Association (ENA)
    • Your local chapter may provide additional opportunities for some free credits from local events or even local/national conferences. The local oppportunties may not be 100% free, but they are usually quite affordable.
  • ENA University
    • There are plenty of free credit opportunities on interesting topics. ENA does a good job of updating these fairly often as well.
  • Nurses Service Organization (NSO)
    • If you have malpractice insurance with them, suprise free CEU opportunities may present themselves!
  • Sepsis Alliance Institute
    • Just make a free account and learn as much as you can about sepsis, while earning free credits!
  • Your job!
    • Ask your manager, or unit educator for additional free CEU resources. My job tends to have someting caled Nursing Grand Rounds and awards about an hour of CEU credit. We also get free CEU opportunities via. newsletters/emails.

There it is! A quick list of places to find free CEUs as an emergency room nurse.
