Hello all! Today I wanted to share a informative post with you all about my major: nursing! As some of you may know I am a sophomore in college and am currently completing my fourth and final semester of pre-requisites for nursing school. I will begin nursing school in the fall of 2018 and hopefully obtain my BSN in 2020. Feel free to follow my blog if you are interested!

Before we begin, I would like to give you a little background on me. Please keep in mind not everyone who obtains their BSN takes the same route as I am and I will discuss that further into this post.

• I attend a four-year university
• I am currently a sophomore, who has already applied and been accepted to my school’s BSN program.

What can you do with a Bachelors of Nursing Degree?

Nursing is full of so many opportunities, I could not begin to list out everything possible. After obtaining a BSN one could work on a hospital floor, seek out an internship/externship, work in a clinic, work in an office setting, a local school, etc.

How long does it take to obtain a BSN in nursing?

This really depends on the person, because sometimes life may get in the way and someone may have to take a break from school. Others may take a different route and obtain their ADN (Associates Degree of Nursing) first at a community college, get hired and complete the necessary education to become a BSN online.  Some other people complete their pre-reqs or Associates of Science at a community college ad then transfer to a BSN program. However, for me, a BSN takes four years: two years of prerequisite courses and two years of nursing school.

When do you apply for nursing school?

This varies based on the program. I recommend speaking with your academic advisor about this or even calling the school(s) you plan on applying to. For my schools’s program we apply during our third semester of prerequisites (during the fall of our sophomore year).

What are the requirements for nursing schools/programs?

This also varies between programs. For my program, we have specific courses we are required to take. For the sake of time, I will link my course lists below so you can see:

(Something to keep in mind is that was not required to take English 101, Sociology or a University Uni class because of high school AP credits)

What happens after graduation?

After you get pinned and you graduate, you are not really a nurse yet, you simply have a BSN degree. You still have to study for and take the National Council Licensure Examination or the NCLEX-RN. Once you pass the exam, you will be able to practice as a nurse in your state. Some people will apply for jobs after they pass the NCLEX, but lately many hospitals/sites will hire you before you graduate and pass NCLEX. You would begin working after your employer knows you pass.
